MS ANNETTE (Hawkins) MARTIN's, husband , John W. Martin, 85, passed away November 22 at Community North Hospital, Indianapolis, Indiana. Born March 16, 1928 in Sardinia, Ohio, he was the fifth of ten children, born to the late Lloyd and Freida Martin. John graduated from Eagle Township Rural High School, Fincastle, Ohio in 1946 where he was the only member of his class. John enlisted in the US Army in June 1948. After basic training at Ft. Jackson, SC, he was assigned to General MacArthur headquarters in Tokyo, Japan, serving in the 332 Machine Records unit for 3 ½ years. He became First Sergeant of the 332 Machine Records unit in Ft Knox, KY, for 2 years. Company Commander Major Bradd Coans asked him where he wanted assigned next and jokingly John said Hawaii. His next assignment was a Chief of Operations for the Statistical and Accounting branch of the Adjutant General Division US Army Pacific (Honolulu). He joined the Adjutant General school, Data Processing Dept., as the chief enlisted instructor. In addition to teaching various Data Processing and Systems Analysis & Design classes, he directed scheduling of instructors and counseling for students. His department's director LTC John P. Richards, recommended him for a direct commission as a First Lt. in the Adjutant General Corps. In 1959, he was appointed a First Lt and started the Adjutant General Advanced Class. After graduating, he was assigned to the 96th Machine Records Unit in Heidelburg, Germany, for just over 3 years. Upon returning from Germany, he was again assigned to the AG School at Ft Harrison, Indianapolis, IN. Three years later he was sent to serve in Vietnam. 1965 was spent in Saigon and Quitton as a Military Assistance Command Advisor, where one of his duties was delivering pay to troops in action by helicopter. After Vietnam he returned to the AG School in Indianapolis where he served until retiring at the rank of Major in 1969. After working as a computer analyst for the College Life Insurance Company as well as the Dept. of Education of Indiana, John chose to work at the US Army Finance Center in the military pay division. In 19 years of civil service, he went from GS11 to GM14 before retiring in 1990. He was active in not-for-profit organizations of Oaklandon Community and Geist District, as well as the Lawrence Township Citizens Council. He enjoyed helping at Camp Atterbury with deployment support of Guard and Reserve. John was preceded in death by his wife of 43 years Audra; brothers, Kenneth and Frank and sister, Ruth.
He is survived by his wife of 16 years, Annette (Hawkins); his children, Deborah Wagner, Douglas (Lou), Dean (Kathy) and Daniel; grandchildren, Andrew, Kelly, Aleesha, Nick, Ben, Kristin, Katherine; brothers, Ralph, Robert, Lloyd and sisters, Phyllis, Shirley and Mary Evelyn.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, November 30, 2013 at 11:00 a.m., with services following at 1:00 p.m., all in Flanner and Buchanan - Washington Park East, 10722 E. Washington St., Indianapolis, IN. Military burial will be at Washington Park East Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the , Wounded Warrior Project or the .
