Fort Harrison 56th St. Chapel's Fate

526, 30 Apr 2012

Dave Mikkelson sent us this email concerning the fate of a building many of us recall from our time(s) at Uncle Ben's Rest Home.  (See also his report on how the "Bean" Windows came to be ensconced in that chapel):

Dear Family & Friends -

Many of you know that our Christians United Church @ Soldiers' Memorial Chapel at the old Fort Benjamin Harrison has been attempting to purchase the facility since the owners, Lawrence School District, announced it would be putting it up for sale as excess property to their needs.

We did in fact put in a 'bid' with a Letter of Intent to purchase contingent on financing, BUT were 'blindsided' by a 'bid' from a private school here in INDY for the full appraised amount on all the properties. The LSD has approved sale of the property and accepted that proposal a week ago at the LSD School Board meeting.

The 'other shoe' dropped last Thursday when we were called by LSD and told to evict the premises by May 8 - a mere 10 day notification. Too much 'stuff' to go into about all that. So at this point we have a week to 'get out'. Of course that realistically can't happen with moving contents, etc. and we'll see what legal steps can be taken to intervene. The congregation is devastated with 1) lost opportunity to purchase our church, and 2) a totally unreasonable demand to vacate on such a short time frame.

Will update you on what happens if you're interested. And if you are - your prayers and those of your friends and church for us would be greatly appreciated.

Blessings to all -

Dave & Bonnie Mikkelson
