D-Day Tribute
1124, 09 Jun 2014Receiver this from John Boyer;
Yesterday was D day. I was at the VA for a checkup and decided to have lunch there. The cafeteria was crowded as usual so EX GI's can load up on bad food again. I shared a table with a 94 year old WW II Nurse in a wheelchair, who told me about her first day in France on June 13 1944 and how in the first month she treated wounded from 7 allied nations, French Civilians and German solders. Quietly she told me that the nurses gave no or little care to the German SS.
I was on my mobility scooter and as I was leaving I saw a black woman veteran with a prosthetic leg and two crutches struggling to use her crutches and keep her balance as she tried to empty her trash and return her tray .I said to her, " let me do that for you" and after I disposed of the tray she came over and kissed me on the cheek and said "Thanks for your service". She is what a real hero is about. As I was leaving the VA I spotted about 10 VETS wearing their WW II hats. We will miss them when they are gone.
Then I went home and watch the memorial ceremony from Normandy France. There were many heads of state there including the Queen of England and the queen of Belgium along with Putkin and Obama. Putkin arrived in a Mercedes 300 Limo with no security and Obama showed up in a Black Ford Explorer surrounded by 4 other such vehicles and tons of security. Then every time the cameras were focused on the two, the Russian leader looked solemn and Obama was chewing gum. What a turnoff.
Anyhow, I am forwarding this tribute to you and hope you will forward it. At the start there is footage of a military cemetery at Christmas with wreaths at the headstone. I have made donations and have help lay the Christmas wreaths for the last 5 years so If you are interested in doing so at a military cemetary near you, contact the VA cemetery in your area to get a contact so you can donate time or money. If you are not lucky, contact me and I will help.
