LTC KENT H BUTTS passed away on Monday, August 15, 2016.

Kent Hughes Butts, PhD, LTC(R), 65, died peacefully in his home on Monday, August 15, 2016.

 He is survived by his best friend, soulmate and wife of 43 years, April Thulin Butts, a fraternal aunt and several cousins. Dr. Butts was born in Knoxville, Tennessee and raised in Daytona Beach, Florida.

 A graduate of the United States Military Academy, West Point, NY, he holds a Master's Degree in Business Administration from Boston University, an MA and PhD in Geography from the University of Washington and was a John M. Olin Post-Doctoral Fellow in National Security at the Center for International Affairs, Harvard University. He served as both a Finance Officer and Foreign Area (Africa) Officer to complete a twenty-year military career. He was a graduate of the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth and the U.S. Army War College, and formerly held the George C. Marshall Chair of Military Studies (USAWC). He was a Distinguished Fellow and Full Professor of Political Military Strategy at the US Army War College where he served as the Director of the National Security Issues Group, Center for Strategic Leadership from 1993 to 2013. He taught on the Faculty at Penn State University, Department of Homeland Security. He was appointed a Senior Fellow at the Center of Naval Analysis. Dr. Butts has over three hundred publications either as author and/or editor to his credit. He testified before Congress twice on the topic of Climate Change and Security. His passions included surfing and skiing. His gifts to others were his humor, loyalty, humility and sincerity. He "gave" without hesitation or reservation to friends and strangers alike. He will be missed by all who knew him.
