LTC WALTER J. FALCONER To TAPS

964, 31 Dec 2013

LTC WALTER J. FALCONER passed away 4/22/2013.

Ltc. Walter J. Falconer
August 24, 1930 - April 22, 2013
Resident of Walnut Creek

Walter J. Falconer, Sr., native San Franciscan, Saint Ignatius class of '48, and University of San Francisco class of '52, passed away peacefully in Walnut Creek, California following a short illness.

After serving two years in the Marine reserves, at graduation, Walt accepted a Regular Army Commission. He retired in 1974 as a Lieutenant Colonel. He served in Korea, and as the Finance Officer with the 101st Airborne Division in Vietnam.

After retirement, he and his family settled in Walnut Creek where he embarked on a second career working in the Contra Costa County assessor's office. Punctuating this third phase of his life, he earned an M.B.A. from Golden Gate University, became an Enrolled Agent, and opened his own tax preparation business. A voracious reader, his interests later in life included following the stock market and keeping up with current events. He was particularly passionate about taking courses with the DVC Emeritus program and served as a board member. He also enjoyed classes at the UC East Bay campus in the Scholar Olli program.

Walt Falconer was indeed a "Hail Fellow Well Met," with cherished friends and relationships that go back 70 years or more. He was an accomplished writer, artist, poet, singer, trumpet player, and orator, but most of all he was a devoted husband of 60 years, and a loving father.

He is survived by his wife Margaret (Peg) Falconer of Walnut Creek, his Sons, Walter J. Falconer, Jr. (Suzanne) and David "Spike" Falconer (Christine), his daughter, Gini Agnew (James), grand-son James Johnson (Becky), and great grand-daughters Ashlyn and Kaylee Johnson.

Jim Bronson added this note:

I served with Walt Falconer in Viet Nam in 1970-1971 with the 101st Airborne Division –he was the Finance Officer.  He will be missed.

I remember the first month  -  there was a problem with his signature dye.  So, we had to hand sign over 10,000 checks.

Then Al Durning came in as the Deputy and through his efforts he prepared and implemented our C-day regulations.

Then Walt Falconer, Al Durning, Gene Hansen, I, and many of our men had to burn all the old MPC.
