SGM(RET) Joseph M. VARGO to TAPs

799, 10 Apr 2013
SGM(RET) Joseph M. VARGO passed away on Thursday, June 14, 2012.

SGM Vargo made his peaceful exit from this world on June 14, 2012, due to complications resulting from his short but fierce battle with brain cancer. Joseph was born in Columbus, Ohio, on July 26, 1928, to Joseph Vargo and Anna Tasko, both originally from Hungary. At the age of 17, he joined the U.S. Army and served proudly in both the Vietnam and Korean wars. Joseph thrived in the Army, reaching the rank of Sergeant Major before retiring from active duty after nearly 27 years of service. He then worked as a civilian for the Army until his retirement at the age of 64.

An avid and skilled bowler, Joseph had a great interest in sports of all kinds. He was also known for his passion for politics and frequently shared his thoughts and musings in the Monterey Herald. He was a devoted family man, a storyteller, and quite the jokester, charming people and making friends wherever he went.

Joseph is survived by his loving wife of over 50 years, Kil Soon Vargo, and his daughters Patricia Haefeli of Klingnau, Switzerland, and Michaele and Marya Vargo, both of San Francisco.
