SGM JOHN W. NULL To TAPS

John William Null, Jr. departed this world on Friday, January 26, 2024 at home with his wife by his side.

He was born November 17, 1947 in Akron, Ohio to John William and Kathleene (Hazelett) Null. John was a 1965 graduate of Tallmadge (Ohio) High School.

He joined the United States Army in February of 1966, retiring 25 years later at the rank of Sergeant Major/E9. During his military career he was stationed in Vietnam, Thailand, Japan, Korea, Panama, Germany, and several army bases within the United States. After his military retirement, he began a career with the Department of Defense, retiring in 2011 as a GS12. John was always up to adventure and loved to travel; during his lifetime he visited or lived in 39 countries. In addition to traveling, he was an avid golfer, an average bowler, and had a passion for books and reading.


He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Bruce and Robert; oldest child, Elizabeth; and granddaughter, Courtney.

Those left to treasure his memory include his wife of 41 years, Mary Kay (Haddock) Null; daughter, Cynthia (Null) Naegele; son, John William Null III; ten grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a special cousin, Phyllis Meredith; as well as a much-loved nephew, William Null, his wife Mary, and their children.


As per John's wishes, memorialization will be by cremation.

John was a colleague and a good friend and will be sorely missed by our Finance Community. Karen and I offer our most sincere condolences to Mary-Kay who was by his side throughout his long and valiant fight with a terrible, ravaging disease. RIP my friend.
