SFC MARTIN P. (MARTY) STEIN To TAPS

Martin “Marty” Phillip Stein, age 70, of Cataract, WI passed away peacefully in his sleep on the morning of July 6th, 2023 with his beloved wife, Patricia, by his side.

Marty was born on January 28, 1953 to Phillip and Donna Stein in Port Huron, MI and was raised in Lakeport, MI. He attended St. Edward’s Catholic School during his elementary years and then went on to be in the last graduating class of Port Huron Catholic High School, Class of 1971. After graduating, Marty went on to join the U.S. Army in 1973.

Marty enjoyed a long career in the U.S. Army from 1973 to 1994 with tours overseas in Korea and Germany. He was stationed in Fort Riley, KS for the majority of his career. Marty was honorably discharged as a Sergeant First Class E-7. His entire career was spent in the Army Finance Corps, processing military pay, travel, disbursing and commercial vendor pay.

Marty met his wife, Pat, during his military time and they were married on May 1, 1997. After retiring from the Army in 1994, he took a short “retirement break” then took a position for a civilian job on Fort McCoy in 1995 working under finance until he officially retired again in 2013. Marty and Pat enjoyed their retirement years on their property in Wisconsin with frequent trips to their favorite casinos across the United States with Lake Tahoe being one of his favorite destinations.

He was an avid hunter, bowler and golfer and shared his passion with his children while they were growing up. He was a proud member of his local American Legion and VFW posts and he enjoyed promoting and helping with multiple Veterans programs. He was also a moderator for the Port Huron, MI Facebook group where he enjoyed helping those in the community he loved. One of his greatest loves, after his wife and children, was rooting for all his favorite Michigan sports teams! Let’s Go Red Wings!

Marty was preceded in death by his parents, Phillip and Donna Stein, and stepmother, Carole Stein. He is survived by his wife, Patricia Dempsey; cherished children, Phillip Stein and Heather Stein Waggoner; adored grandchildren, Jacob and Trinity Stein and Hannah Waggoner; beloved sisters, Diane (Robert) Foglesong and Marsha (Marlin) Barker; nieces Melissa King and Christina (Steve) Thale, and brother Frank (Debbie) Tricia and Steven Stein.
