LTC ROBERT T. MORT To TAPS

2078, 21 Aug 2017

Bob MortLt. Col. Robert T. Mort U.S. Army (Ret.) COLUMBIA - Services for Lt. Col. Robert T. Mort, U.S. Army (Ret.), 99, were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 6, 2017, at North Trenholm Baptist Church with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Serenity Gardens.

COL Mort, devoted husband and loving father, made his triumphant march to Heaven on Wednesday, May 3, 2017, following a brief illness. Born in Altoona, PA, he was the youngest son of the late William H. and Ida Smith Mort.

He joined the U.S. Army prior to WWII and served in the European Theatre during the war. After attaining the rank of Lt. Col., with almost 30 years of service, he retired at Fort Jackson in 1965. He entered Civil Service and retired with 15 years of service.

While stationed at Shaw Army Air Base in Sumter during WWII, he met the love of his life, Argent Atkinson of Lee County, SC. Their marriage of 64 years began in October of 1942. Following Mrs. Mort's passing in 2006, he continued to travel throughout the country to visit family and friends. He was a regulkar and enthusiastic participant in RAFINO reunions.  These extended trips included TN, VA, PA, IA, NM, WY, the West Coast, and HI.

COL Mort was part of a unique generation that believed you should make all you can, save all you can and give all you can. And spend more time thanking God for what you have instead of asking for more. He is remembered by all for his sense of humor, quick wit, and genuine friendliness.

Surviving are his two sons, Robert T. Mort, Jr. (Katie) of Elgin and Gary L. Mort of Columbia; three grandchildren, William W. Mort, Robert T. Mort III, and Marianne Stiehr; two great-grandchildren, Nora Stiehr and Connor Mort. He was predeceased by three brothers and two sisters.

In lieu of flowers, the family requested that memorial gifts be made to Hospice Care of South Carolina, 3955 Southern Way, Suite 1, Unit 1, West Columbia, SC 29169. Please sign the online guestbook at www.dunbarfunerals.com.
