2014, 12 Nov 2018

UPDATE

As we announced in May of 2017, it has finally happened (and it took a guy named Omar to announce it!)

Army Leaders,

Today, on Veterans' Day at 1100 hours, the Army announced that it is adopting the iconic Greens uniform as our new service uniform.

The news release and supporting messages are attached.  Please send all media queries to OCPA.  And, please let me know if you need anything from me or the OCPA team.  Thank you.

The Army message and talking points follows:

Army Message:  To help sustain the All-Volunteer Force, we must go to the American people and inspire confidence in our Army's professionalism and readiness. To ensure we present a professional appearance, the Army is adopting the iconic Greens uniform as its new service uniform. This is the uniform worn by America's Greatest Generation as they won World War II. Now, America's Next Greatest Generation will wear it as they develop into the smart, thoughtful, and innovative leaders of character outlined in the Army Vision.

Talking Points:

.  We believe this uniform - and its powerful identification with the "Greatest Generation" of WWII - will inspire today's Soldiers and enhance esprit de corps.

.  Extensive internal survey and polling data has shown overwhelming support (75%+) for this uniform.

.  This uniform will help attract quality applicants to the service, which could have a very positive impact on Army recruiting. Inspiring the next generation to serve is critical in an era when less than 4% of American youth are qualified and have the propensity to join the military.

.  The Blues uniform is too formal for day-to-day wear and was never intended as our daily service uniform; it will return to being a formal uniform.

.  The Blues uniform will remain as an optional uniform for Enlisted Soldiers and NCOs, as was the case before our last uniform change.

.  Adoption of the Army Greens should increase opportunity for U.S. manufacturers. In addition to continuing to provide components for the Blues uniform, many companies would be expected to compete to provide the new Greens.

.  Army leaders found a cost-neutral solution for enlisted Soldiers and for American taxpayers. There will also be a long transition period to accommodate Soldiers nearing retirement

Way Ahead:  The Army will begin issuing the Greens uniform to new Soldiers no earlier than summer of 2020. The mandatory wear date for all Soldiers is 2028.

Omar

Will we see the return of the "sun tans" that we wore as a summer Class A uniform in the early sixties?  How about the Kahki washable and starched uniforms with the tucked tie?  There was a short sleeeve version without tie, as well.  Who remembers the starched shorts and over the calf stockings worn in the warm climates like Fort Sill in July?!  Come on guys, I always regretted not wearing the Sam Brown belt.  Dick Darcy
