LTC RAYMOND GILCHRIST To TAPS

LTC (RET) Raymond Gilchrist, Jr. gave his final salute 3 March 2016. He was born 16 August 1926 in Richmond, VA where he resided until volunteering for the U.S. Army in 1944. He was a combat veteran ofWWII, Korea, and Vietnam retiring from the Regular Army 1 March 1970. At that time he and his family moved to Farmville, VA where he became Registrar and Assoc. Professor at Longwood College until August 1983.

He attended Richmond Public Schools, R.P.I, V.M.I., and earned a B.S. from the University of Maryland and an M.B.A. from Syracuse University. He was predeceased by his beloved mother and father, Mary and Raymond Gilchrist Sr., and two beloved sons, James R. Gilchrist and Stephen N. Gilchrist.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Carolyn Norman Gilchrist and their three beloved daughters- Janet Long of Girdwood, AK, Mary L. Paynter of Moyock, NC, Laurel A. Gunter of Norfolk, VA and their husbands. Carrying on his legacy are eight wonderful grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren. 

He truly loved his beloved Carol, his wonderful family, his country and had a passion for living and helping others. Memorial contributions may be given to the Veteran's Administration, Palliative Care Unit
