LTC DAN M. NEWMAN To TAPS

LTC DAN M. NEWMAN passed away 9/12/2014.

He died after a battle with cancer while surrounded by family and friends. Dan was born in Dumas, Texas, on July 30, 1945, and grew up on the family ranch in Stratford, Texas. He is the son of Rollo and Virtena Newman and youngest of nine siblings. He is survived by his wife and best friend of 37 years, Monika Boger Newman of Miesau, Germany; his daughter-in-law, Lisa Boyd Newman and granddaughter Krya Renwick Newman of Fredricksburg, Virginia; his sisters Mattie Baskin, Kathryn Newman, and Pat Vigneau and brothers Lowell, Roy, and Bob Newman; brothers-in-law Juergen and Christian, and sister-in-law Bernadette of Germany; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of dear friends. Dan was predeceased by his parents, his sister Betty Jo Johnson, his brother Ned, and his son, Donald Newman. 

Dan graduated from Stratford High School in 1963. He was a proud alumnus of Texas Tech University where he received a Bachelor's Degree in 1967 and his Master's Degree in Agricultural Economics from the University of Arizona in 1970. In 1977, Dan met and married his soul mate, Monika. Dan had a remarkable career as a United States Army Finance Corps Officer serving this great nation for 23 years in diverse positions in Vietnam, Turkey, Europe and various US locations with a last assignment in Fort Wainwright, Alaska. Dan retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. Among other awards Dan was a recipient of the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star, and the Vietnam Service Medal. Upon retiring from the Army in 1992, Dan and Monika relocated from Virginia to Colorado Springs, Colorado. 

In 1996 Dan began employment with Vinnell Corporation, an international private military company specializing in military training and logistics. He was part of the corporation's training efforts with the Saudi Arabian National Guard in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Upon his return to Colorado Springs in 1998, Dan began a successful career in a real estate representing Saddletree Homes and ultimately finished his career with Weichert, Realtors - Pikes Peak Group in 2013. 



Dan was an avid hunter, skier, fisherman, motorcycle enthusiast, and a certified scuba diver. He was also a certified instructor for the National Rifle Association, teaching hunter and gun safety for the Colorado Parks & Wildlife Division. In addition, Dan founded Gun Training USA with his partner and friend, Lenny Piazza. He was a member of the Patriot Guard Riders supporting veteran burials, and helped establish a neighborhood watch team to prevent crime and vandalism. Dan remained a charter member of the Wye River Hunt Club at the Eastern Shore of Maryland. 

In all walks of life, Dan was a mentor and friend to many. He enriched countless lives and was loved and admired by those who knew him. Dan will long be remembered by his family and his many friends for his warmth, his genuine smile and humor, his kindness and his generosity. He will be greatly missed. 

A celebration of Dan's life will be held at a later date.
