REUNION OF THE STARS
INDIANAPOLIS --
Soldiers and civilians assigned to the Soldier Support Center at Fort Benjamin
Harrison from 1903 -1995 are invited to attend a reunion being planned for Aug.
11, 2001 from 9am - 6pm at the Knights of Columbus, 4332 N. German Church Road,
Indianapolis.
In its heyday, the Soldier Support Center, Fort Benjamin Harrison, was
responsible for training 26,000 soldiers and civilians annually at a variety of
schools including the Adjutant General, Finance, Recruiting & Retention, and
Defense Information Schools in addition to the Noncommissioned Officers Academy.
A catered picnic menu will consist of grilled chicken, hamburgers, hot dogs and
brats with baked beans and potato salad. Attendees may bring soft drinks,
but alcoholic beverages must be purchased at the reunion. Athletic events,
including horseshoes and softball, are being planned.
Maj. Gen. (Ret.) Ronald E. Brooks, the post's final Commanding General, is
encouraging soldiers and civilians to make the journey back to Indianapolis and
check up on Fort Benjamin Harrison. "The place has changed big time,"
said Brooks. "The city of Lawrence has done well with the redevelopment and
has built it's new 50,000 square foot city hall right in the center of the
fort," he added.
Brooks, who spent 17 of his 34-year Army career at Fort Benjamin Harrison,
remembers how well the post did in getting troops to and back from Operation
Desert Shield and Storm. "That is my fondest memory. It was a
challenge to take care of them. I think it would be a good idea to come to
the reunion and relive old times."
